Canterbury

After visiting Leeds Castle we headed over to Canterbury. This town has a deep history but is most known for its cathedral and most notably providing the framework for Geoffrey Chaucer's 14th-century collection of stories, The Canterbury Tales.

We take the bus over there and along the way we see more sheep! This one's for you mom!

This is the main old part of the city called High Street. Most towns have a High Street which is like our Main Street.

This was the first view of the Cathedral we saw. Our tour guide said this was the best view of the cathedral from the city because all of the buildings are too tight to see it from any of the streets. I don't know what he was talking about because after Eric and I started walking around without the group we could see it just fine.

After our little tour of the city we had a few hours to wander around before having to meet back at the bus. We were starving by then so we headed to the nearest pub for something warm to fill our tummies.

And this is what we found. It was a delightful place and had the best pies!

This was my lunch (really it ended up being breakfast, lunch and dinner - we were stuffed!).
Chicken and Leek pie. Mmm Mmm Mmm. (This one's for you Bob! These are the pies I was telling you about that I thought would be right up your alley.)

So with a full belly we were off once again to look around the town.

This old pub is said to be the oldest building in the city. It looked old too. But really cool.

Here is the Canterbury Cathedral. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury who is the leader of the Church of England. The cathedral's first archbishop was St. Augustine of Canterbury.Augustine founded the cathedral in 602. Yes, 602! But has been added to and restored a number of times. There is just so much history to this cathedral and town.

Well, our day is nearing an end. As we bid farewell to this little town I would like to add another ode to our other mom, Gayle. These last few pictures were taken from the bus. My dad likes to give her a hard time because she is always taking pictures from a moving vehicle. Well mom, these are in your honor.

(The old town of Canterbury is surrounded by a large city wall made of stone. Many of the towns have a similar structure surrounding the old party of the town. This is part of their wall.)
